The Bad Kind of 3 Day Weekend

I had a wedding in South Jersey this weekend. Awesome time. wonderful ceremony. Wonderful party afterward. My wife was all drunkified and sweet. All the other bridesmaids were entertaining as well.

I showed up at the rehearsal dinner on Friday night and the spread was amazing. Before I could get up to say hello to the mother of the bride, she was like sit down, eat. mange…. I should have understood right there that I was in trouble.

I didn’t bike commute on Friday because I knew I had to be on a bus after work. So no riding for 3 days + eating like a friggin hog == the bad kind of 3 day weekend. I gained 4 lbs.

Other stuff:

NJ Route 40, although slow in a car, is scenic as hell and probably the way I am going to ride to the shore the next time I do a ride down there.(perhaps some weekend in June.)

They had my bike ready on Friday. This was totally unexpected. and awesome. I pick it up manana. I’m going to need it to work off the weekend’s Epicurean decadence.

In which I Dispense with the Formality of Titles and Narrative

Today’s ride, totally boring. Straight into work. Straight home.

Dead cat on the road this morning, low 40s, Chestnut street. People need to keep their cats indoors. depressing.

Last night was much more interesting:

Meanwhile, I’ve become a drooler. I was loosing water the whole ride up Kelly Drive last night. I have never drooled before. Not once, at least not doing anything sports related.

Recap episode of Lost tonight. Total f*ing garbage. So sick of a season of like 8 episodes taking 12 months to get thru. This season is it for me. Next year, I am blowing off the live broadcasts and waiting for the DVDs. That providing they don’t totally jump the shark in the remaining episodes of this season.

Trying to finish reading Stranger in a Strange Land. total slog. Heinlein is way too didactic.

But I went thru a phase a while back where I failed to finish every book I picked up for about 6 months. Back to it(finishing the book.)

Random, Disorganized, Uncollected Bits

#1)Baby brought home wasabi peanuts. The bomb. And by the bomb, I mean as good as wasabi peas except that you get hit with a core of peanut buttery deliciousness just as your mouth is recovering from the wasabi.

nice.

#2)Took the long way home, out to East Falls Bridge, and tooled thru the park on the West side of the river until I got to Overbrook. I love that neighborhood. especially Woodbine ave. Beautiful houses. Huge enclosed porches. big fire places.

I maybe burned it a little bit going out to the bridge. It was not a leisurely ride. When I got home, I drank about a liter of water. Stepped on the scale, 176.5.

At the bridge, I noted that dudes in serious kit on serious bikes were all congregated on the west side for a group ride. Definitely going to need to get some gears, if I want to get dropped by that lot. which brings me to:

#3)Getting fitted for a bike on Thursday! Probably going to find out all the ways that my Puch is wrong for me.

After we get the specs lined up, I can start figuring out what will be my first serious road bike.

On The Road…uh…again?

Very good ride today. First time I felt good on the bike in like 2 weeks.

44+ miles. good speed.

#1)Tacony Street/State Road. Fairly ridable except for the big patches of coradory on the road around Tacony Creek Neighborhood, right about the Tacony Palmayra Bridge. Also, This is where they have facilties that, according to the signs allow people to ‘Change with Dignity’…The Philadelphia jails are all there. You can see Holmesburg Prison, right on the other side of I95.

Also, Also, Road Discovery: Lucy’s BBQ. Maybe I was just hungry, but hot damn, that place smelled good. I got to thinking ‘I wonder if they do chicken double white meat with corn bread, like Dallas BBQ.’

This is not good to be thinking about in the middle of the ride.

A Stray Bullet, a Road Find

#2)Nearly killed the other two guys I was riding with when I noticed a 9mm bullet(casing and shell intact) on the road someplace in the 50s in West Philadelphia on the ride home, and had to stop and pick it up. AW had my wheel. Sorry, dude.

#3)All I could think of was that scene from The Wall. The one where the kid puts the shells on the train tracks. That and it looked really shiny and I wanted it.

#3)Got home to TIVO taping Liège-Bastogne-Liège happy day.

Saturday. The Longest Day of the Week.

Things:

#1)Rain. It blows. Especially on days when You are supposed to be out riding your bicycle. especially when it comes down in sheets. sideways. It makes a day go on forever.
But hey, at least I won’t hear those reports on NPR in the morning anymore about how little rain we’ve had this year and have that back of my head anxiety that we are going to have drought conditions come June, thusly wrecking my summer tomato and pepper crops.

#2)Capote. Rented it tonight. I enjoyed it alot more then I expected I would for a movie w Phillip Seymour Hoffman in it. Made me go and read up on the man himself.

#3) Meadowlands by The Wrens. Mike from Audible told me this band was awesome over 2 years ago. I’m just catching up now. I’m slow. Better late then never. This record is fantastic.
