First off, it was summer, really, only in name. Monsoon season began the day I left the office and did not let up until Labor Day. There were patches of overcast days. However, the stretch was decidedly downpourey.
#1)Rode a century(100 miles) in Bucks County with my friend AW, set up by the good folks at Suburban Cyclists dot org. Its a shame it was raining sideways at the start. By the time, we got dry, around mile 74, we came to a part of the ride that could be termed ‘hilly’. At the end of this stretch,(perhaps another 5-8 miles) we were basically toast. We spent the next 10 miles trying really hard to keep our bike computers MPH readings in the double digets. The remaining miles after this were a merciful gift from the organizers.
The whole ride reminded me of the Blair Witch Project a little bit. You know, at the beginning, they are all joking around, they are making their little documentary. They are walking around in the woods. And then they notice a pile of sticks. And then they get lost. One of the film makers disappears, and then things go south in a big way. That was kind of what this ride was like. Except substitute rain for creepy and hills for a paranormal murderer of children and young adults.
#2)Three days later I still couldn’t look at my bike.
#3)My dad came over and we did home improvement for a whole day. I hung drywall. I spackled. I sanded. I painted. Our second bathroom is almost complete. My new office almost looks like a real work space.
#4)We went to the shore. The weather turned from overcast to monsoon conditions again, thanks to Hurrican Ernesto. The original plan was to ride down again before the upcoming MS150. That didn’t happen.
#5)Turned 33 on Sunday. Rode 46 miles with my brother on the mainland in South Jersey. A good day.
#6)And my lovely wife gave me two awesome gifts:
Rapha fixed gear pants and an awesome t-shirt from Threadless.
#7)We left the shore on Labor Day. It was beautiful out. I took cold comfort in how rainy it was on my commute today. I mean, at least its not nice out when I am back at work. :)
The new pants worked well in the rain.
