Bike Commuting Again! No Seriously.

Got up at 6am. Road the trainer for an hour. Then road into work. It was cold; but not terrible. I was pre-occupied with trying to get my ducks in a row for when I am out of the office in April.

I saw lots of folks cruising down Chestnut by Penn. Lots of people out cruising thru downtown. Lots of people who were not bike messengers.

Tommorrow’s March 1st. Its just about time.

Dudes:

#1)Bobke Strutt points out that Moocher from Breaking Away is up for best supporting actor tonight at the Oscars.

Sidenote: building a list of bike blogs. Will be doing a page dedicated to this subject shortly.

Side Sidenote: Have been kicking a wall of shame for bicycling related websites. Most blogs, by virtue of being blogs look nice. Lots of club, manufacturers, and shop sites seem to be holding their websites together with duck tape and Frontpage 97. I like to spend as much of my free time cycling as any of those people, but I at least try to make my audience comfortable.

#2)Snow. f*ng snow.

#3)Work out plan called for hills yesterday so I climbed La Colina yesterday. It was so much worse then I remembered.

Commuting Begins Anew

So this morning was the first bicycle commute that I’ve done in over a month. Have you ever taken the train into New York City? There is that period of time after you get out of the relative comfort of your train, and walk into the haze of Penn station. Somewhere like 200 steps from the entrance to the subway, it hits you. total sensory overload. And then, the part of your brain capable of ignoring where that smell is coming from, bums asking for change, obscene amounts of advertising, and tons of oblivious busy rushing people, it kicks in. Call it the psychic blast shield. You sigh, and say, ‘Oh right, I’m back in New York City…’

My commute reminded me of that feeling. I haven’t been on the road in a week and a half. I haven’t been on the road for rush hour, since maybe november. It was a little chilly, there were clumps of snow and melting ice inconveniently placed near parked cars up and down walnut street. People were driving like idiots. There were plenty of places where people were piled up enough that I could ride in traffic. Plenty of freshly dug wholes in the road too. (Thanks Streets department.) It was all pretty overwhelming for the first 30 blocks.

Then I remembered that my commute really is the best part of my day. and the blast shield came up.
