Single Screen Movie Houses
2/20/2008 – 10:39 pmBy the mid-80s all the single screen movie theaters were disappearing. Smarter people then me can talk about the rise/prevalence of corner video stores and multiplexes. Although, maybe not so much cable television, as that didn’t actually show up in Philly until 1987. Anyway a few movies, a couple movie theaters, in no particular order:
Ghostbusters, 1984 at some single screen movie theater on Castor Ave, The Castor? My parents took me. As a gift for my Confirmation. The theme song still shows up in my head on rides.
Also, that scene where DR. Venkmen says ‘I think we were destined to get kicked out of this dump…’ Not just my college, but right in front of the library I used to work in.
Meatballs II(III?), 1985 at the Benner, also on Castor Avenue. Part of a matinée triple feature. I remember that everyone from St. Martin of Tours(my grade school.) was there. The other movies though? No idea.
Tough Guys, 1987 at the Dirty Devon. I think this was my first date to see a movie. Waiting for our ride, I think my date’s mom was coming to pick us all up, some kid walked up on me and punched me in the face. No rhyme. No reason.
These things happen.
No wonder cable caught on so big.
