I decided months ago that the best way to get to the MBV show was to go up the morning of and work in AOL’s offices there. So I got up at 5:30am, caught the 6:52 Amtrak to Penn Station and made my way down to Union Square.
THe offices at 770 Broadway are kind of awesome. For one thing, they are in NYC. A change of scenery every so often is nice. On top of that, they are almost right on top of NYU. Which means that the atmosphere on the street around the building is pretty laid back. The old offices were in midtown in the fashion district. Total zoo.
Also at 770, they have the best vending machines ever. At least 3 of the 5 of them took debit cards. One of them was stocked with vitamin water and red bulls. The other was stocked with starbucks frap in a bottle and Izze soda.
Worked the whole day. Packed up and headed north at 6. met RM & RO in front of the Times building. Got dinner in Times Square. Some weird shit was happening in the square. People as far as you could see where seated in the middle of the street, watching opera on the Jumbotrons.
Anyway, MBV were nothing short of amazing. They opened with ‘I only said’:
I can’t tell if it was the strobes from the light show, coupled with the volume, or the brief time I spent considering exactly how long 16 years is, but my eyes actually got misty almost immediately after they started playing.
Now, I like alot of music. But I don’t love alot of music. My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless, I absolutely love. Its an awesome, ageless record. Every time I have come back to it since I picked up 16 years ago, I hear it a little bit differently, appreciate it a little bit more.
So the show was worth the trip.
I went back to RM’s place in brooklyn, slept on his couch until like 10 till 5, then went to Penn Station, and caught 2 trains to my office in Suburban PA.
I got in on time.

So like… what were the crowds like?
I think the last show I went to was Built to Spill, about two years ago. The crowd was what you’d expect.
I need to learn to like new music.
Crowd was thick with people. Most looked like they were too young to have seen them the last time they came around.
Since you put this comment in, i was trying to think of any new band I had heard and really really liked in the last 12 months. I’m going to admit that I came up with nothing.
