Random #1: My wife expressed a vague interest this week in possibly moving to a quiet neighborhood in Northwest Philadelphia. She was working on Saturday, so I took the boy for a drive out there, so we could walk around.
I got out of the car, rounded a corner and ran straight into a historical re-enactment of the battle of Germantown. Costumes, musket smoke and canons afire. The works.
At first glance, The Battle of Germantown would seem to be a strange battle to want to ren-enact. I mean, if you read the above wiki article, you will see that this battle was the last in a string of charlie foxtrots for the continental army before they packed it in for a cold cold winter in Valley Forge.
But their scrappiness impressed European courts. So maybe the Battle of Germantown was the continental army’s Tet offensive.
Anyway, G and I took a strol When we were done, we headed back to the car. This guy walks up abreast to us and says ‘Thats what my first tour in Iraq sounded like.’ as another round of muskets went off.
We walked along and BS’d for a minute or two (what he knew about the battle of Germantown. That he grew up in the neighborhood. That this overgrown lot we passed needed to be turned into a community garden.)until we reached my car and started to split up. As I was putting G into the baby seat, he turns to me and says to me, kind of appropo of nothing:
“Sarah Palin scares me.”
I kind of blinked as the statement sort of came out of nowhere.
“You and Me both.” I replied.
And off he went.
Random #2: On the train, on the way to WordCamp this morning. I had a kitten that we found, but we’re giving up for adoption. As I was about to get off the train, I was approached by 2 ladies w thick eastern european accents. They immediately started checking out the cat.
“So cute. Are you taking it to get it blessed?”
Now this may sound like a random question. However, I knew exactly what they were asking me.
“Are they celebrating the feast of St. Francis of Assisi at St. John the Divine today?”
They told me it was and they were. These two were headed up to watch.
This was something friends of mine participated in in college. They took their iguanas over and got them blessed. And check out whatever animals were allowed out of the zoo that day.
