What Would Donald Draper Do?

8/4/2008 – 8:31 pm
Next month, we are going cable free.  I will admit here and now that I will not enjoy waiting until the Mad Men DVDs become available at the library to finish watching the season. Meanwhile, someone has begun answering the question What would Donald Draper Do?

Another One Goes By

8/3/2008 – 7:58 pm
Did the CyleSports circuit race in Doylestown, PA today.  Great course, location and event. Result wise,  it was about the same as the rest of season.  That is: a mid to back of the pack finish. I didn't hang around to see the exact placing. What went well:  I went to the front right away and did some work on laps 1 and 2. Dropped to mid pack for a bunch of laps.  Moved up and sat on my team captain's wheel a bit later few laps.  Bumped elbows and handle bars more then once to stay on it.  Tightened the small gap between us whenever anyone came up in the wind looking to hop in.    It made sense to do this for 2 reasons: #1: my captain is a big guy and provides a good sized slipstream, so that helped me. #2: I felt like it was important to deny help that ...

Handle Bars for Battle

8/2/2008 – 9:30 pm
Brass knuckles, originally uploaded by chris_mckenna.   I took Graham and the Bat to the Rolling Canvas Collective art show in Northern Liberties. A bunch of frames got arted up, including the riot bike above. The event was sponsored by Fuji Bikes. The bikes are getting auctioned off, proceeds go to the Neighborhood Bike Works.

Coughing, and then The Road

8/2/2008 – 10:08 am
I was sick.  There was much consumption of antihistamines.  Eventually, I just stopped with the drugs and coughed it all out.  Coughing like nasuea, where when the foul humors were finally ejected,  all that was left was light headedness and a sense of relief. I mean, summer colds.  wtf? I'm basically back to normal now. I gave up on two books I was reading:  a history of tea and a book about the a modern recreation of St. Brenden's voyage to North America from 9th century Ireland.  Much to my wife's chagrin. I did pick up and read Cormac McCarthy's The Road after one of my riding buddies told me that his company was doing the post and effects for the film.   I was going to quit on McCarthy after All the Pretty Horses.  His style seems to me to be such a constant, so distinct, that all his books would be the same. Sort of ...

as you know, as cyclists, ‘we have it coming’

7/16/2008 – 8:09 pm
BH emailed me an excellent dissection of the 'myth of the scofflaw cyclist', from WashCycle, the DC version of the Philadelphia Bicycle Coalition blog. Pretty awesome to have someone lay out the stats like that.

Mullica Van Ronde Race Report.

7/14/2008 – 8:01 pm
2 years running, I have registered...and then not showed up. Awesome! Both of my friends racing the 5s were taken out in a crash. Not awesome.

Does this make De La Fuente Ralph Macchio?

7/14/2008 – 7:59 pm
Why does Riccardo Ricco, aka 'The Cobra' immediately make me think of Cobra Kai from the Karate Kid? Sweep the leg, Johnny. heh.

My Son as a Heat Source

7/13/2008 – 9:15 pm
Friday night at around 2:30am, I wake to the boy screaming. Now normally, I waken to the end of this kind of thing, ie Mrs. H has gone in and started calming him down. She's good like that. Anyway, I am completely awake and the boy is still screaming. Mrs. H is not in the bed which means she's either already in there and not calming him down...or she's downstairs making herself a sandwich. The letters w, t, and f are starting to bubble up into my head. I go to the nursery and there is a screaming woogle and my wife, telling me that we need to take him to an emergency room because he's too hot. Luckily for the both of us, I'm too sleepy to panic. I go back into the bedroom and put on some clothes and start looking for my keys. By the time I ...

New Meaning to the Words ‘Course Obstacles’

7/10/2008 – 10:17 pm
Remind me to never again pretend to complain about having to alter course on the West River Time Trial because of Canadian Geese crossing the road. This mountain bike racer got attacked by a bear.
