Small Reward

14-Apr-09

The conditions were relentless this morning, rainy, windy etc.  Had my best rowing coach’s voice bouncing around in my head climbing the rise coming away from my house…’You row the conditions.  The conditions don’t row you.’ Its gems like this one, implanted at 16, that can convince an otherwise smart person to go for a training [...]

Quieting Bicycle Trainers.

02-Dec-08

In an effort to find information online about quieting down my jet engine foundation of house shaking bicycle trainer. I googled ’siliencing bicycle trainers’ not much there. I tried ‘quieting bicycle trainers’.
I got this article from the times in 1909 about 2 Madison riders who got in a dispute over money and started [...]

In Which We Dump Cable Television

02-Oct-08

Stephanie and I have been talking about kicking Comcast to the curb for months.  Its been this on again, off again thing.  We agree in principal that TV is a waste of time.  And that Comcast is expensive.  And that we don’t really use most of what we pay for.
We agree in principal that we [...]

MS150 2008, In Brief.

02-Oct-08

For the second year in a row, I ended up doing the century on the first day and then calling it a weekend.
The only thing I regret is not riding back to Cherry Hill so that I could eat like 40 pieces of Dominos in one sitting.  There is something awesome about being that hungry. [...]

Commute Notes.

24-Sep-08

Ride in:  I saw the above telephone/power poll on Stenton Avenue above the Morris Arboretum toward Valley Green road.  It may be hard to tell from this picture, but the entire bottom of the pole is gone, shattered into 100 pieces.  The top, actually most of the pole is still there, hanging suspended, between 2 [...]

Best NYT Article on Cycling, maybe ever.

07-Sep-08

NYT is running an article on the single speed world championships. What ever you do, don’t miss the slideshow.
Choice quote:
“Not drinking is the S.S.W.C. version of doping,” Phelan wrote on her blog after the Napa race, adding that it was a “cowardly, unfair physical advantage which I freely deploy.”
(Way to make me dig for [...]

Nockamixon Century Part III

25-Aug-08

This year marks the third year in a row I’ve done the Nockamixon Century.  I wrote about 2006 and I have Garmin data from 2007.  I’ve said of those two days that they were the single most difficult days of riding in those years.  This year I didn’t feel that bad, the whole way through.
Probably for [...]

Don’t Mess With Gereint…

12-Aug-08

I’ve been a little obsessed on and off, for years, with a detail from the story Branwen Daughter of Llyr, of the Mabinogion.  In this story, there is a description of a caldron that, when dead warriors were thrown in, they’d come back to life the next day, ready to fight, but unable to speak.
So, [...]

Another One Goes By

03-Aug-08

Did the CyleSports circuit race in Doylestown, PA today.  Great course, location and event.
Result wise,  it was about the same as the rest of season.  That is: a mid to back of the pack finish. I didn’t hang around to see the exact placing.
What went well:  I went to the front right away and did some [...]

Handle Bars for Battle

02-Aug-08

Brass knuckles, originally uploaded by chris_mckenna.

I took Graham and the Bat to the Rolling Canvas Collective art show in Northern Liberties. A bunch of frames got arted up, including the riot bike above. The event was sponsored by Fuji Bikes.
The bikes are getting auctioned off, proceeds go to the Neighborhood Bike Works.
